T. B. Joshua, called Temitope Balogun Joshua, was a well-known pastor, televangelist, and philanthropist from Nigeria. He was the founder and leader of the Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN), a Christian megachurch located in Lagos that operates the Emmanuel TV television station.

T. B. Joshua Early Life and Education

Temitope Balogun Joshua was born on June 12, 1963, an indigene of Arigidi in Akoko local government, Ondo State, Nigeria. He was born into a humble Christian family. The names of his parents are Folarin Balogun and Kolawole Balogun, who was former translator.

The prophet, before his death, claimed to have been surrounded by extraordinary events from his birth. He claimed he was born 15 months after his mother conceived him. He also claimed to have narrowly escaped death when he was three days old, a large boulder crashed through the roof of their house from a quarry site, missing him by a few inches. After the horrific incident, his mother named him ‘Temitope,’ meaning “What God has done for me is worthy of thanks”.

Joshua attended St. Stephen’s Anglican Primary School in Arigidi Akoko, Nigeria, between 1971 and 1977, but unfortunately failed to complete one year of secondary school education due to his poor background before he left to work in a poultry farm. In school, he was known as a “small pastor” because of his love for the Bible. He organized Bible studies for local children and attended evening school during this period.

His attempt to venture into the contemporary world was not fruitful, as his efforts to venture into contemporary life failed several times. One of these occasions was when his aspirations to join the military were thwarted due to a train breakdown that left him stranded en route to the military academy on his way to an interview at the Nigerian Defense Academy, Kaduna State, Nigeria.

It was not surprising that TB Joshua, a pastor known in his community, chose to pursue a career in ministry. He grew up teaching others about the Bible and claimed to have learned directly from God through his dreams. As an active member of the Anglican Church, Joshua participated in various church activities and was even selected to chair the children’s Harvest/thanksgiving ceremony.

He was a leader of the Student Christian Fellowship back then in school. However, when it comes to his call to start up a ministry, Joshua had a different story to tell. He said he had a personal encounter with God in 1987 when in a three days trance, he saw a hand that pointed a Bible to his heart, and the Bible entered his heart and was immersed in his heart immediately.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) was established with humble beginnings, starting with only a small group of members. Nevertheless, it quickly gained recognition as one of Nigeria’s most influential churches. The founder of SCOAN, TB Joshua, commenced his ministry in 1987 at the young age of 24. Initially, he operated from a dilapidated house located in the Agoda-Egbe neighborhood in Lagos State. However, as word of his miracles and prophecies spread throughout the country, an increasing number of people began to visit his ministry. To accommodate the growing number of congregants, The Synagogue, Church of All Nations later relocated to the outskirts of Lagos city, providing a larger space for its members to worship.

The church has its branch in Ghana, Synagogue Church of All Nations Accra Ghana. It also has other branches in the United Kingdom, Greece, Israel, and South Africa. Followers outside these countries can make a prior fellowship request before attending. Most of their sermons and faith healings are broadcasted on Emmanuel TV, a network run by SCOAN.

Many of TB Joshua’s supporters considered his prayers to be potent. His apparent talent for healing and casting out evil spirits was widely accepted by a large number of people. As a result, these individuals undertook lengthy trips to seek out his help.

The Nigerian televangelist proposed to his wife, Evelyn Joshua, during their first meeting. He believed their meeting was divine and arranged by God, as he had seen her in a revelation four days earlier. Evelyn had visited him before but was unable to find him until her second visit when she urgently needed guidance and found him in his office. They have three daughters together Sarah, Promise, and Heart Joshua, they are now adults and are pursuing different professions.

In 2008, TB Joshua was conferred with the National Honor of OFR by the Nigerian government for his humanitarian endeavors.
He was honored as an Ambassador of Peace by the Arewa Youth Forum for his humanitarian work.

TB Joshua Death

The televangelist’s church broke the news about his death on June 5th, 2021 but has not disclosed the cause. TB Joshua’s Ministries wrote in a Facebook post about his death as they broke the information to the world:

On Saturday, June 5^th, 2021, Prophet TB Joshua spoke during the Emmanuel TV Partners Meeting: “Time for everything — time to come here for prayer and time to return home after the service. God has taken His servant Prophet TB Joshua home — as it should be by divine will. His last moments on earth were spent in the service of God. This is what he was born for, lived for, and died for.

TB Joshua, the Founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), was laid to rest in the church premises on July 9th, 2021 at Ikotun, Lagos. July 5th to July 11th was dedicated to a series of Mr. Joshua’s “laying to rest” activities.
